I have to admit, I've never really been one to watch award ceremonies and I honestly didn't know that the Oscars and the Academy Awards were in fact the same thing. Seriously, I'm not joking, I actually thought they were different award ceremonies and I was perplexed! And to make matters worse, I didn't figure this out from my own amazing deductive reasoning skills, no, no, my boyfriend was the one who actually updated me on this! Yes, he got a good kick out of the whole thing.
Like I said, I've never been one to watch any of the televised awards. I typically pick up my mom's People magazine or hear about it on TV later the next day and hear who the winners are. It's never been something that I sought out because I was absolutely dying to know who this years winners were and what everyone wore, though I do enjoy the dresses-mainly because I'm jealous I'll never get to wear them. I got to catch a bit of the awards before and after The Walking Dead and I can honestly say I'd probably never purposely choose to put them on again (sorry if that offends anyone) unless there was nothing good on TV.
I love movies.
I have the utmost respect for movies. It is truly an art, poetic in nature and capable of endless opportunities. Movies are the key to our imagination. Whatever we think, feel, see and dream of can become a movie. The work and dedication that gets put into a movie-no matter how terrible, short or long it is, it's a commitment. But sometimes even with all the brilliant minds around today, the movies that use the most creativity, tackle the toughest topics, hurdle the toughest obstacles are never recognized and some terrible movie out there, like Twilight, (yet again, no offense) wins all awards because of the fan base. I'm a big fan of reading and I understand that no matter how bad the movie is you're going to want to see the movie if you read the book, because the book is always better, but that honestly doesn't mean the movie version deserves to win a high honor such as an Oscar, leave that to the People's Choice Awards.
It's just a movie
It is just a movie. Movies let us escape our own worlds and jump into a new reality for a short amount of time. They are an escape. For a few short hours we get to watch someone else's problems unfold instead of our own. This is not where I have the problem. In fact, it is another reason I love them. The problem I have is that these people who have all this money, get acknowledged for putting together something that distracts us and yet we don't have awards in this country for people who do the best job they can to create a better world. Oh wait, we do. It's called the Nobel Peace Prize and I've never seen it on TV or it be so acknowledged. It saddens me how much our culture idolizes people on the big screen when you have hero's around you making a difference.
Wiser
The older I get the more I realize how broken and backwards our society has become. We idolize people because they are rich, so we give them more money...? And because they are famous they get to be treated differently by the law than we, your average citizens do? When I was a a young girl I wanted to be a singer. As I grew up I wanted to be something more productive for society, something that made a difference. I do neither, but I can make a difference by not idolizing the wrong people.
Sorry about the rant today. I truly do love movies but it saddens me to see what they are becoming and that any idiot can and will remake a great movie with big explosions, no plot and yet will win an Oscar. This is the reason I don't pick movies based on the awards they have "earned". I understand that a lot of what determines a great movie today is based on our own daily ways of communication and living. We live in a faster world than we did in the 20's and therefore the movies move at a much faster pace. Maybe it's time to slow down, take a breath and appreciate the simple things. Watch a great movie.
